GIVI MT505 5L Tanklock Tank Bag

Kenneth Moonitz

Tank bags fall into two clear categories: total clutter magnets that ruin your paint, or seamless extensions of your cockpit. The GIVI MT505 lands squarely in the second camp.

Let’s get this out of the way—it isn't a massive multi-day touring bag. At 5 liters, you’re not fitting a spare jacket or a pair of boots in here.

But... that’s also not really what this bag is trying to be.

What it is, is fast, clean, and ridiculously practical for daily riding. The Tanklock quick-release ring is genuinely awesome—a instant pop-on, pop-off mechanism that keeps the bag hovering safely off your tank paint without messing around with straps or dirty magnets.

Unlike older tank bags that featured clear plastic phone sleeves that eventually degraded or overheated your device in direct sunlight, the MT505 swaps that out for a semi-rigid, protective thermoformed top. It gives the bag a clean structure that double-functions as a comfortable spot to rest on during long highway slouches.

The internal 5L storage is surprisingly spacious for everyday essentials. It easily swallows sunglasses, phone chargers, loose coins, and small road items without feeling crammed. Plus, keeping a garage door opener tucked into one of the side pouches is a game-changer—you can pop your garage door open as you roll up to the house without ever bringing the bike to a complete stop.

Now for the trade-offs.

If you are coming from an older bag whose zippers blew out and became unrepairable, zipper longevity is always a slight lingering anxiety on any daily-use bag. While the MT505 feels solid out of the box, you still need to respect the 5L limit and avoid over-stuffing it to protect the teeth over time.

And then there's the phone visibility thing—if you relied heavily on seeing live GPS directions right through a clear top window, you'll need to adapt to bar-mounted navigation or audio cues instead.

But here’s where it wins:

It makes everyday riding exponentially smoother.

Like, borderline "how did I commute without this" good. The combination of instant mounting, a rigid protective shell, and quick-access pockets turns quick errands and daily rides into an absolute breeze.

At the end of the day, this isn't the bag you pick to carry a weekend's worth of luggage.

It’s the bag you pick because:

  • The quick-release Tanklock mechanism is effortless

  • The rigid top shell is durable and comfortable to lean on

  • It organizes your phone, chargers, and garage opener perfectly for on-the-go access

...and you’re okay ditching the clear phone window to get a sturdier setup. Makes for a nice pillow while riding!
